My PCOS Nightmare

by Chira

My PCOS story goes something like this. I like many of you have struggled to have a child. I was 25 years old and wanted a baby more than anything in the whole world but it just wasnt happening . I began my trek to many doctors to see what was wrong. I found out that I had cyst on my ovaries. I eventually made it through all that. I did become pregnant after many years of tears and frustration. I was not diagnosed with PCOS at that time. I was told I had cyst and they would go away. I never really had irregular periods but I did not ovulate every month which was confusing to me.

I went on to have PMS very badly for two more years. I tried for my next baby and had to wait only a year for him. I was becoming use to having health problems and I just thought this was life as a women. It really took away from my being the best mother I could be because I was so sick and hormonal all the time. I began to only feel well two weeks out of the month. Then I started gaining weight. The weight was not all, I was losing my hair and I was very depressed. My sister had told me about a disorder called PCOS. She is an esthetician and had seen many clients with facial hair problems. Some were overweight some were thin but they all had PCOS. She suggested I get tested for it. I read about it and told myself that I did not have it because I had regular periods so I could not have it. That is what all the information about PCOS said, you had to miss periods for many months. That is not true at all. I finally out of extreme desperation asked my primary care doctor to see if I had PCOS. He did the blood test and it came back that I did have high testosterone levels. He believed that I did have it. He did not give me any diet information or anything for me to do to help this condition. I left there with zero information.

I took it upon myself to seek out the best endocrinologist in my city. I was so hopeful that he could help me get well. He had all the credentials but as I sat in his office I almost cried because he said he did not think I had PCOS. I was just going through early menopause. I was 34 years old. He then did an ultrasound and did not see the ring of cyst on my ovaries but did see a few cyst. He said no you dont have this. This is just part of being a women. I left there about two thousand dollars poorer since I did not have insurance at the time. I was very sad and confused. He did not say anything about why my testosterone levels were so out of whack.

I wanted to tell you all that to tell you this. DO NOT GO TO JUST ANY DOCTOR. I am going to help you find the right doctor so you do not have to go through all that I have been through. I have been over 10 years trying to figure out what was wrong with me. If I had known what this was that I had, I would have known how to eat with this, how to exercise how to cope with this depression. I would have been so far ahead of this disorder. That is what I want for you. I hope this site will be help to you and will bless you.

I am now on my way to a better life with this pcos. I have a great doctor that knows about this hormonal disorder and what I am going through. He is helping me with medication, diet and whole food supplements. I am not well but I will be soon. Please read my site and know that I am here for you and I will try to give you as much information as possible to help you avoid some of the things I have had to go through. You will get well, you will lose weight. You can have a baby. God loves you just the way you are. He wants you to be well and be happy. Read on and do one thing for me right now. Measure your waist. If it is 35 inches or bigger then start eating a healthy carb diet something like the south beach diet . Dont go overboard with it just start learning about good carbs and low glycemic foods, that is what your body needs because chances are you have insulin problems if your waist is that size or bigger. (Mine is, so dont be discouraged just start to eat healthier today) This will help you to stop the weight gain and get you started in case you do have PCOS. If you already know you have it then you need to be eating this way already. I know its hard, I am a self described home CHEF so I love food just like you. But you can do this, you will feel better.

AACE Campaign Designed to Educate Doctors and Patients about PCOS The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and PCOSA recently partnered to launch a Public Awareness Campaign to reach out to women of all ages with PCOS. As part of this initiative, AACE has released aPosition Statement on PCOS, which recommends taking a holistic approach to patient evaluation and treatment, considering the underlying endocrine condition as the root of PCOS. The statement highlights the serious health consequences of PCOS if left untreated or if treated only symptomatically. This document recommends lifestyle changes for PCOS patients, as well as the use of the insulin-sensitizing drug, metformin. This should be a great help to us. We can only hope Doctors will study this information and apply this in their practices.
